2010: The year in quilts

/ Wednesday, 29 December 2010 /
It's been great to see everyone's summary of their work in 2010. Collectively, we have been a busy lot! I'm hoping to be just as productive in 2011, but we will have to see how it goes. Some things I am planning for the coming year include:
  • A quiltalong with Jennifer - we are going to make a Triple Irish Chain, if we can ever get ourselves organized to pick colours
  • Further adventures in Kaleidoscope Land - I am looking forward to trying out the Marti Michell Kaleido Ruler and comparing it to the Smart Plate.
  • Shannon's BOM
  • Seriously cutting back on my fabric purchases
This last may be made easier by the rise of cotton prices. Deborah of Whipstitch wrote a very clear and thoughtful post about the cause of the rise in prices and the effects of this on the LQS owner and on us as consumers and quilters. She talks about prices going up $.60 a yard in her shop, and I have read others report increases as much as a dollar a yard. I'm sure that seems like a lot, but as a Canadian, it puts yardage still well under the average price that we pay here, in the neighbourhood of $15 per meter. (It is true that a meter is bigger than a yard - but not that much bigger!) And so, as long as the exchange rates hold, it will still be more economical for us to buy online from American stores. Of course, it's important to remember that economy is, or -- from my perspective -- should be, only one element that factors into our decision of where to buy fabric. I am curious to know whether or how this will affect your buying and quilting habits this year. What do you think?
P.S. Thanks so much for the love about the kaleido finish I posted about; it truly made me feel so much better. I have decided to definitely send it out to a LA-er, and I am feeling very hopeful that this will redeem the quilt and make it into the beauty I know is inside it!

Lesly, your finishes for the year are lovely! And how did you do the mosaic picture montage? I'd love to do that myself....

I don't think it'll affect my fabric buying much, since I buy most of my fabric at thrift stores and yard sales. Cotton thread and batting, may be a different story.

I love your quilts, you have done heaps, I would be lucky to have three I think. I Live in Australia and buy most of my fabrics from America because fabric here is very expensive, only problem I have to buy large quantities to make it economical, a price rise will have little effect on my purchasing but a fall in the Aussie dollar will. Hope 2011 is another great year of quilting.

gotta do my mosaic...

i'm going on a fabric diet, myself. the only reason i'll allow myself to purchase is for our quilt along. other than that, i'm cold turkey.

perhaps i'll post a pretty little list of sewing resolutions.

Great year you've had! If I 'want' a fabric I'll probably still buy some BUT I have a significant stash and I'm leaning more to dyeing my own fabric so this could be the right time to not actually 'want' any fabric! ;)

I saw that article too. It did cause me to pause and remind myself that I have, literally, bucketloads of fabric in my stash. I need to shop there first.
