Trying something new

I'm going to LA in two weeks and I'm going to be bringing this quilt to my friend, who has suffered all kinds of personal setbacks over the last 18 months. I feel like there's nothing better than a quilt to stand as a reminder that you are loved, especially when the people whom you care about are so far away. So you've seen photos of the Trip Around the World quilt top, and now I'm getting ready to quilt it up. I'm trying something new in the quilting department! I've mostly done FMQ swirls or meanders or flowers, but this time I thought I would give straight lines a try. When I pin-basted it this afternoon I used low-tack painters' tape to mark some quilting lines. The tape is about one or one and a half inches across, and my plan is to quilt along each side of the tape that is currently stuck on there. Then I'll shift the tape over to the next row of blocks and repeat the process, so that there is quilting through each line of squares, either on the diagonal or straight. I am excited to try this - I think the quilting in different directions will give some extra interest to the final product. Wish me luck!

that will look great! Are you planning to use a walking foot? I find it makes straight line quilting a little easier.
What a beautiful quilt! And the quilting you've planned out looks really good - I second the motion to use a walking foot, it will make it go much easier and fewer (or no) pinches on the back!!
At first I thought you had put that green in as a "design element". Thankfully it's just marking tape!
The quilt ought to marvelous when you are finished with it!
Ditto what Cathy said!
Good Luck, looks like you've given this some thought and are off to a good start. I like the clean lines straight line quilting gives a top, I'm not sure why more folks don't go with that type of quilting. I like it!
Aren't big rooms and big tables great for basting. A great mqing plan!
Oh it will look gorgeous! And your friend will truly be happier with a quilt of love around her.
Nice quilt, I don't remember seeing this one. Good luck with the quilting.
Hee, hee..I also thought the tape was part of your piecing. And I actually thought it was cool looking....not the color but the solid lines. I wonder how hard that would be......hummmm. :)
Quilt is gorgeous.
Keeping my fingers crossed for you, but I'm sure it'll look great.
Your quilting design is gorgeous - it will enhance the quilt beautifully! Do you have an edge guide for your sewing machine? It looks like a bent bar about 4" long, or maybe a straight bar with a plastic piece. It works great for sewing straight lines an equal distance apart. This website has a brief video that shows how to use it. It's a possible alternative to moving the tape - just mark and sew the first line, then use the edge guide to sew the rest.
