Inspired or insane?

/ Saturday 10 April 2010 /
There's a new swap setting up - it's for spiderweb blocks. I said I would do it, but here's the thing. I'm really ambivalent about those centre "kites". Seems like everybody is having them done in white, or sometimes gray, but these don't resonate with me. I definitely don't want white. I have two big dogs - need I say more? And gray just doesn't thrill me for he background for this block. I kind of like this cocoa-coloured background, but not enough to make one like it.  So I made a block today, using this green and ivory print from Amy Butler's Love line. I really can't tell what I think about it. I try imagine a whole quilt made with it. I think it would work - the pattern is obvious, but not too aggressive. And let me tell you, this block is some heavy lifting, timewise. I have to really like it to press ahead. So, is this block inspired or insane?
Edited to add that I Have a Notion is having a giveaway for an Accuquilt Go.  Talk about insane AND inspired!  It's part of their 30 days of giveaways marking the 1 year anniversary of their store, and you can enter for a chance at any of the prizes on posts from March 15 - April 15 until April 15 at 10pm CMT.

Thank you for visiting my sew and tell. I enjoy my visit to your blog. That is a most beautiful block!!! I love that "star" in light mint green in the center.

this block is insane. but to see a whole finished quilt is quite inspiring! i like the green print you've chosen for your kites-- i think a full quilt of this will look very fresh.

Lesly, amazing job on that block, the seams are freakishly accurate. Personally, I think the center is a little weak. It's pretty, for sure, but I think it needs to be bolder. Keep in mind that I've never seen an entire quilt made from this block, and that your block is the only spiderweb block I've seen.....my suggestions are navy blue or red for the center......solids..... Black would look good, but that's seems like a standard fallback position.....

Good Luck! I can't believe I'm giving you fabric choice suggestions.....that's your thing, if you like it, it will be gorgeous, if you're waffling, try something else.

Well, for sure that is big a committment. But I do like that fresh green. The print is subtle enough to act like a solid, I'm thinking, so the web should stand out just fine. But I'm glad it is you and not me!

it's the quilt at the top of the post that inspired me to start planning a spiderweb (mine's here). I just loved how she used different prints for the kites. I think the visual key here is to make the first ring of "web" with a similar-toned fabric, she uses red, I went with dark blue.
I love your green center.
be careful, the blocks are addictive, good luck~

I vote inspired!!! You go girl!!! But you should know that I am thinking to do a selvage string quilt with bright purple at the senter of each block. That, I know, is insane!!!
Blessings,

KT

I like the green print. How about alternating with similar prints?

I am really ambivalent about which center that I want to use as well. I am currently thinking about using a multi colored novelty print & coordinting solid-y fabrics for the webs... maybe making solid-y webs - or scrappy...

I really like the green fabric and it's lovely to see something other than white in the centre.

If you're worried about what an entire quilt would look like, how about cropping the photo of the block and putting it in a mosaic maker or duplicating it and making a grid in a photo editor. That would maybe give you an idea of how the finished quilt could look?

Definitely inspired! I'm not a white person myself, or at least I like to push the boundaries so this suits me. BUt it's your quilt. You have to love it.

The center of this is beautiful! Keep it up!

I really like the unique-ness of the print. It is soft and gentle, but much more interesting than a solid would be. You are right regarding the time factor, I have had a spiderweb going for a couple of years (using a bubblegum pink semi-solid batik for my kites) and only have 145 more blocks to go! Making it queen size and using left over binding bits from my entire quilt history for the strips. It is also slow going because I longarm full time, not much sewing time for me. Go for it!
