Help! What now?

What now?, originally uploaded by Shadrach Meshach & Abednego.
Help needed, friends! I need to make a quick lap quilt for a wedding gift. I have left it to the last minute and I have found that I cannot command inspiration the way I thought I would be able to! I have long admired this Echino linen, and I thought it would make an elegant centre panel. This is 1 yard x WOF. I cut a million 4" squares of pink, turquoise and purple cottons and linens to make a border. Originally, I had a plan to make a second, spiky border, similar to this one, with a background of a few Kona cottons in green, and the spikes in the same turquoise, pink and purple as the squares. Do you think that would be too much like a train wreck? Or would it look awesome? Another possibility is to make a border that incorporated words, like Tonya does. I could put "Denys + Nina August 6, 2010". Too tacky? Or I could just leave it like it is. Oh, please sing out and give me some good advice!!

Ooh, that spikey border would look good. My first thought was to have thin vertical rectangles echoing the centre fabric pattern - so, staring in dark purple at the bottom and going through cream to the lighter purple on top. That would only work if you had those colours, though, and if you wanted to emphasize the small square part. Hm.

So far good! I don't know about spikey but I like those bands of colour in the centre panel. I'd try to get those square patches to kinda float by doing something dark on the bottom, lighter along the sides and then the medium on the top. It seems kinda pontilist so the squares continue that feeling IMHO. I do like what you've got so far.

The colours are marvelous and I love how you've placed the center panel. What about mimicking the branch design the birds are on and have their names embroidered off of the branches? Their tree is growing with love...

If time is the biggest issue, I think it looks great the way it is. I'm having a hard time envisioning the spikes with the rest. If I was going to add anything, I think I would add a simple solid border, perhaps with a few branches like a previous commenter suggested. I would have their names either in the quilting or as a label on the back, rather than such a major part of the design.

looks good!

add a solid PURPLE (why don't you ever listen to me!>?!?) border, and then do that spiky border. that will make it plenty bigger!

I am not feeling the spiky border. rather a small darker purple border to frame it then maybe a larger border with some great quilting in that.

Hi Lesly!

I love what you've done so far, that center panel is wonderful. Here's what i would do, add a solid or tone on tone bold 2 1/2 inch border . Then surround that with the wonky spikes using the same color cream or white that's in the center of the panel as the background instead of the greens you mentioned.

Not loving the words idea with what you've got so far.

Good Luck!!

I'd just add a plain complimenting border onto this and maybe just add an appropriate label re the gift onto the back - remember it's often a case of less is more

looks great so far. i like your idea of words or branches like someone else mentioned.

I think a plain border would be pretty and let the center of the quilt shine, with maybe the words on the back...

I like the spiky border idea and I think I would leave the writing for in the quilting...subtle but there.

Looks good. I like the spiky border sounds awesome! I like the writing idea, but I think I would put it on the label on the back.

Hugs and stitches,
Jennifer
