Before I get to the business at hand, just a quick pause to show off my lovely daughter and one of my two gorgeous dogs! Eve is certainly going to miss her fur sisters when she goes off to university next fall!
And now back to our regularly scheduled programming. As promised in my last post, this morning I set out my vinyl tablecloth on the living room floor and tried out four layouts of the HSTs made with Maison de Garance. None of them use all of the 160 HSTs that I have - I just wanted to get an idea of the look. Here they are:
(1) Zigzag
(2) Don't know what this layout is called officially, but I have been thinking of it as Lattice Diamonds (ignore those random blocks along the left side).
(3) Single diamonds
(4) Single triangles
So what do you think is the nicest? I'm sure there are other layouts that I didn't try; for example, the barn raising layout with concentric diamonds radiating out from the centre. I'm not terribly fond of that one, so I didn't bother with it. But if there are others that I should know about please do say!
P.S. Thanks, all of you, for that bunch of wonderfully encouraging comments on yesterday's post when I was feeling so blue about that quilt top. I've got a line on some long-armers, and I'm filled with renewed hope!

I strongly prefer the simplicity of the first one.
Single diamonds, or perhaps the second one!
Good luck!
I'm going to throw a monkey wrench in the works - I love the lattice diamonds, but if you want simplicity, I think the last one is absolutely gorgeous! I think Rita over at Red Pepper Quilts did one like that, and I've loved it ever since!!
I like layout #2. I think it looks the most impressive -- like a very complex time-consuming pattern. It has the most wow-factor I think for a gift.
Version two without a doubt!
I am going to say number 2. I think it looks very pretty. But any of them would be a great quilt ;)
2 or 4. looks like so much fun to play with layouts. i should make some hsts without a goal in mind just to play..
I like the first one best, maybe because it is more unusual than the others. But really, any layout using those beautiful fabrics is sure to be a winner.
I love option (3) the single diamonds. Definitely caught my eye!
My vote is for the last layout - I just love the look of HSTs all in a row.
As for the barn raising, maybe think about an off-centre concentric diamond pattern. Cheryl (naptime quilter) used it for her Values quilt.
My favourite is the lattice diamonds. The pattern Felicity mentioned is a good one too, it would give it a modern feel. Good luck deciding.
The first one, zigzag is my favorite.
I really do like them all but I'm leaning a bit more toward lattice diamonds.
I think single diamonds. I love the way the colors work together.
It will be a beautiful quilt.
oye! They all look good. nggghhhh maybe the second, uhm the last. shoot, can you make a couple?
#4. I never tire of that arrangement. #1 - I guess I've seen too many zigzag quilts lately to find it interesting.
number 2, the so-called lattice layout, is without doubt my favorite of the choices. and my opinion matters. :P
zigzag - most relaxing to the eye for some reason
When I saw your layouts, I immediately fell for No 2. I like the strong, clear contrast it shows! Will be fun to see what you'll finally decide ;-))
I have to agree with Sarah C. I love the lattice diamonds, but the last one is really appealing too. Wow, so may options from your HSTs! Good luck with your decision!
I think it depends on your friend's taste. To me, the single triangles are very traditional (a little old-fashioned?), the single diamonds are really clean and simple/straight-forward, and the lattice diamonds are more sophisticated and complicated. (I'm afraid the zig-zag feels regimented to me.)
As for my preference, I probably prefer the lattice diamonds, with the simple diamonds a very close second.
I'm partial to the single triangle for this one. But I must explain my preference. As I'm not a huge fan of solids, the other layouts have too many solids for my personal taste. The last layout breaks up the solids and lets the patterned fabric shine. Only what I would do if this was mine.
I did a small Lap quilt with HST and thought I was making it with all the same sized diamonds- this is what I got.
I like this larger diamond in the center.

for a larger quilt you could have a couple of these larger diamonds with the small ones filling in.
flying geese!
I really like #2.
I love layout number two, but then I love the block called Blockade.

Most everyone posts this block as a paper-piecing block, which is totally unnecessary if one make a bunch of HSTs.
