My daughter is on the March of the Living. The March is a two-week trip for Jewish teens and young adults that comprises one week in Poland and one week in Israel. In Poland, the young people tour the Warsaw ghetto, various old synagogues, cemeteries and, of course, the concentration camps. Yesterday was Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day. Yesterday, 10,000 Jewish young people from all over the world marched from Auschwitz to Birkenau, symbolically retracing the steps of those unfortunate souls. In the photo above, taken in a Jewish cemetery in Kielc, Poland, my daughter is on the left, being comforted by David Shentow, a Holocaust survivor from Ottawa. It is a very emotional for these youngsters. I am very proud of my daughter, for having the courage to go on this life-changing trip so far away from home and family. But I will also be very happy to have her home again.

We are great supportors of the Jewish people and Israel here in our home. My grandfather fought to keep the North Atlantic open during WWII for supply and troop ships to Europe.

L'olam lo suv.
L'chaim!

And it is through our children knowing what happened to their great grandfathers, mothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, and their friends and strangers that we can truly say these things!

What a special and meaningful trip for your daughter! And you are courageous, too, for allowing her to have this incredible opportunity.

What an amazing experience for your daughter. I can only hope that my boys get the chance to take part in such a trip one day.

PS - I just read Beatrice and Virgil - the new one by Yann Martel. Is a very interesting read especially regarding the Holocaust. I would love to get your opinion of it.

PPS - wishes to your daughter for a safe trip home.

What a great journey for your daughter and family. We must keep these historical events alive so they don't happen again. I just finished reading Sarah's Key. A good read if you have the time.

You daughter is lucky to be able to go on such a trip but I bet you're missing her already. You will just have to do more sewing.

Safe journey to your daughter and all her travel companions.

I hope she has a safe return home if not already home, with the air travel restrictions due to the volcano. What an extraordinary experience she is having. Bless you all.
